Influenza Deaths in U.S. Cities
Title
Influenza Deaths in U.S. Cities
Description
This chart shows the percentage of the population dying from influenza in various U.S. cities. Philadelphia experienced a sharp rise in mortality during the second wave of the pandemic in October 1918. Traditional funeral and burial customs were disrupted. More than 500 corpses awaited burial, some for more than a week, and cold-storage plans were used as temporary morgues.
